Radical Giving - Good Business: Jenny of Rubies in the Rubble

What's your life motto?

Hold things lightly. Enjoy the moment.

What have you learnt so far?

Just go for it. You’ll never know all the answers and you learn more by doing - so just get on and give it a go.

Where is your favourite place?

The west coast of Scotland. I spent all my childhood there. I love the wild and feeling of freedom. It’s where I feel at home and can truly relax.

Name your three favourite words?

Wonderful – love the thought of being in wonder. Morning! – I’ve taken to saying it to any one I pass on my morning. (my husband thinks I’m crazy but it can make my day when a stranger says Good Morning on the street!) Sausage – used by our kids a lot at home when teasing each other. Everyone’s a sausage.

What do you think makes a good company?

A boring answer but great people. A company is just a group of people trying to do one thing well. Getting that mix right with an amazing culture, and you define a business.

Can you describe your workplace?

We work in a big open plan, converted warehouse. It’s a shared office space with a huge canteen, little garden, gym and my friend - the barista.

What is your favourite food?

This is a tough one. I love creating Asian inspired dishes but my favourite meal of the day has to be breakfast. Nothing beats an egg on buttery toast with (and I have to say it as it’s my go to) a big dollop of our Spicy Tomato Relish!

What can you not live without?

Chilli – I love spice.

What is the last thing you bought?

A new beeswax wrap. I love them – for putting over bowls of leftovers, wrapping up cut veg for the kids or a little sandwich. We just created some Rubies in the Rubble branded ones with BeeBee & Leaf which I’m so excited for getting on our site and in stores.

What advice would you give to the younger generation?

Love and value everything you have. Only use what you need. Everything we use has a footprint attached to it so see it as a precious resource and ensure you don’t waste.

Proudest moment?

Seeing our products on a shelf. I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of it. It always gives me a buzz to think that other people also love what we do!

What’s next?

We have some fun mayo flavours on the horizon and are playing with some seasonal relishes. But the biggest thing on our agenda this year is ensuring every one of our products are carbon neutral as well as the company!
