This Thing Is String Striped Mini Hot Water Bottle

A 500ml mini hot water bottle by This Thing Is String, with a hand-knitted cotton string cover and a hand-dyed stripe. Hardwearing yet comforting, its compact size brings a little warmth to chilly days, whether you’re working at your desk or heading out for a winter walk.

Size and materials

  • Bottle dimensions: approximately 14 × 24cm.
  • Capacity: 500ml.
  • Cover: hand-knitted in the round using Everlasto no.4 Polished Cotton Twine.
  • Colour: a hand-dyed stripe on unbleached cotton string. Natural colour variations and small blemishes are part of the string’s character; dyed colours may vary slightly from those shown.
  • Bottle standard: manufactured to British Standard 1970:2012, as stated by the maker.

From the maker

Never one to have idle hands, the maker knits these covers almost daily while going about life, on beaches, car journeys, in waiting rooms and departure lounges. The coloured string is hand-dyed at the kitchen sink, giving each cover its own individual character.

Is the cover removable?

Yes, the hand-knitted cotton string cover can be removed from the bottle. Follow the maker’s instructions below to remove and replace it.

Removing and replacing the cover

Empty the hot water bottle, squeeze out the air and put the stopper back in place. Roll the bottle and squeeze it through the opening at the neck. It is a tight fit and will require a little effort, but the cotton string is hardy and can withstand stretching. To reinsert the bottle, follow these steps in reverse.

Instructions and safety

The maker supplies the following instructions and safety warnings with each hot water bottle:

  • The bottle must only be filled by a competent adult.
  • Check the entire bottle, including the stopper, for signs of wear and tear, damage, splits or perishing before every use.
  • Before first use, fill with cold water to check that the bottle fills properly and has no leaks.
  • Only use the bottle in its cover to prevent burns or skin irritation.
  • Fill with hot water from the tap. Never use boiling or just-boiled water from the kettle.
  • Fill slowly, taking care not to overfill. Three-quarters full is the recommended maximum.
  • Ensure the funnel is empty before firmly tightening the stopper.
  • Do not lie or sit on the hot water bottle.
  • Replace the bottle as soon as you notice any damage or wear and tear.
  • The maker recommends replacing all bottles every two years.
