Why Buying from Independent Makers Has a Bigger Impact Than You Think
In a world where almost anything can be delivered to your door within 24 hours, it can sometimes feel like shopping has become a little... thoughtless.
We scroll, we click, and a parcel arrives a day or two later. It's quick, it's convenient, but often we know very little about where the product came from, who made it or the journey it took to reach us.
That's one of the reasons I created Radical Living. I wanted to create a space filled with beautiful things, but more importantly, beautiful stories.
Every shelf in the shop has been carefully curated with products made by independent makers, artists and small businesses who pour their hearts into what they create. Every ceramic mug, candle, piece of jewellery, print and plant has been chosen because I genuinely believe in the person behind it.
When you buy from an independent maker, you're buying so much more than an object.
You're supporting a dream.
Every Purchase Tells Someone to Keep Going
Running a small creative business isn't always easy.
Behind every product is someone who's taken a chance on themselves. Someone who's spent countless evenings sketching ideas, testing designs, learning new skills and wondering whether anyone will ever buy what they've created.
Many of the makers we work with are packing orders from their kitchen tables, converting spare bedrooms into studios or working late into the evening after finishing another job.
They're not backed by huge corporations or marketing teams. They're simply doing something they love and hoping other people will love it too. Every single order they receive is another reminder that their work matters. It's someone saying, "I see what you've created, and I think it's worth bringing into my home." As a small business owner myself, I know just how much that feeling means.
Handmade Takes Time
Every now and then, I'll hear someone say, "Oh, that's quite expensive."
And I completely understand why.
When we're surrounded by mass-produced products at such low prices, it can be difficult to appreciate everything that goes into creating something by hand.
A handmade ceramic mug may pass through dozens of careful stages before it reaches your morning coffee. Clay is prepared, thrown or moulded, trimmed, dried, fired, glazed, fired again and carefully checked before it's finally wrapped and sent on its way.
What many people don't see is how often that process doesn't quite go to plan. I regularly hear from our wonderful makers who excitedly open their kiln, only to discover that a piece has cracked, warped or the glaze hasn't turned out as they'd hoped. After hours, sometimes even days, of work, they simply have to start all over again. That's the reality of handmade. It isn't about perfection every single time; it's about patience, craftsmanship and an unwavering commitment to creating something they're truly proud of before it ever reaches your home.
The same is true across so many of the collections you'll find at Radical Living. Candles are hand poured, textiles are woven with care, jewellery is assembled piece by piece and artwork is often printed, signed and packaged by the artist themselves.
These aren't products being produced by the thousands every hour. They're made slowly, thoughtfully and with incredible care.
There's something really special about owning something that another pair of hands has spent time creating.
You can often see the tiny details that make each piece unique, whether it's the subtle variation in a glaze, the texture of handwoven fabric or the brushstroke left by an artist.
Those little imperfections aren't flaws. They're reminders that a real person made it.

Small Batches Make Every Piece Feel More Special
One of the things I love most about working with independent makers is that we rarely receive huge deliveries.
Unlike mass-produced products that can be ordered by the hundreds, most of our collections arrive in beautifully small batches. Sometimes we'll receive just six mugs, ten candles or a handful of pieces of jewellery. That's simply the nature of handmade.
Our makers create at a pace that allows them to maintain the quality and craftsmanship they're known for. They aren't rushing to fill warehouses or produce thousands of identical items. Instead, they carefully make each collection in small batches, giving every piece the time and attention it deserves.
It also means things don't always go to plan. I regularly hear from our wonderful makers who excitedly open their kiln, only to discover that a piece has cracked, warped or the glaze hasn't turned out as they'd hoped. After hours, sometimes even days, of work, they simply have to start again. It's all part of the handmade process and one of the reasons these pieces are so special.
When a new delivery arrives at Radical Living, it genuinely feels exciting because I know there may only be a few of each piece available. Once they're gone, they may not return for weeks or even months while the next small batch is lovingly created.
I think there's something really lovely about that. It makes every purchase feel that little bit more meaningful, knowing your piece wasn't one of thousands rolling off a production line, but one of only a small number made by someone's own hands.
Shopping Small Helps Communities Thrive
When you choose to shop with an independent business, your money travels much further than you might realise.
You're supporting the maker who created the product. You're supporting the independent shop that carefully selected it. You're helping local high streets remain full of character rather than becoming rows of identical chain stores.
Independent businesses also tend to work with other independent businesses. Printers, photographers, designers, illustrators, florists, local cafés and couriers all become part of the same ecosystem.
One thoughtful purchase has a ripple effect that reaches far beyond what you carry home in your shopping bag.
I think that's a really lovely thing to be part of.
Why We Curate Every Collection
One of my favourite parts of running Radical Living is discovering new makers.
Sometimes I'll come across someone at a craft fair. Sometimes I'll spot a tiny business on Instagram. Sometimes another maker recommends someone whose work they admire.
Finding new collections is one of the most exciting parts of my job, but I don't choose products simply because they're beautiful.
I want to know the story behind them. Who made them? Where are they made? What inspired the collection? How are they produced? Would I proudly have this in my own home?
If the answer is yes, then I know there's a good chance someone walking into Radical Living will fall in love with it too.
Our shelves are intentionally filled with pieces that have meaning, personality and soul.
The Joy of Owning Something Different
There's something incredibly satisfying about owning something that not everyone else has.
A handmade mug that becomes your favourite. A beautifully scented candle that reminds you of home. A print that makes you smile every time you walk past it. A piece of jewellery that quietly becomes part of your everyday wardrobe. These are the kinds of objects we live alongside every day. The things that make a house feel like home.
When they're made with care, somehow they seem to carry that feeling with them. I think that's why handmade pieces often become the ones we treasure for years.

Shopping Becomes More Meaningful
One of the things I love most about Radical Living is the conversations that happen every day.
People ask where something was made. They want to know who designed it. They ask how a ceramic piece was fired or where the wood came from. Those conversations matter.
When we know the story behind something, we naturally value it more. It stops being "just a candle" or "just a mug." It becomes something made by someone whose work we've come to appreciate. I think that's a much more meaningful way to shop.
